What does hyaluronic acid do in the skin?

It is one of the most popular active ingredients for well ageing: Hyaluronic acid. Our body produces them itself, for example to allow the joints to glide smoothly against each other or to keep the skin smooth, supple and elastic. The natural production of hyaluronic acid slowly decreases from your mid-20s. This also causes the deposits in the connective tissue to break down bit by bit. From around the age of 30, this can become noticeable in the first wrinkles, loss of volume or dry skin, among other things. Treatments with hyaluronic acid are used in various medical fields, including orthopaedics for the treatment of joint problems and aesthetics.

Hyaluronic acid and water

The special feature of hyaluronic acid is that it can bind a large amount of water. One gram of hyaluronic acid can store up to six liters of water. When hyaluronic acid combines with water, it takes on a gel-like form. This gel performs a wide range of functions in the body.

It is one of the main components of synovial fluid and therefore acts as a kind of lubricant. This enables our joints to lift even heavy loads. It also surrounds our eyeball and protects it. In connective tissue, as already mentioned, it fulfills the task of keeping skin and tissue elastic. This allows the skin to stretch to a certain extent and also to retract again.

Virtually no side effects

As hyaluronic acid is well known in the human body, there are hardly any side effects or risks associated with products or treatments using hyaluronic acid. The active ingredient can therefore even be used on sensitive areas without any problems. As an ingredient in eye drops, for example, hyaluronic acid helps to soothe dry, itchy or reddened eyes and provide them with valuable moisture. Hyaluronic acid is also often used as an additive in nasal sprays to moisturize irritated mucous membranes.

In the field of anti-wrinkle treatment, the low risks are also highly valued. The injection only takes a few minutes and usually requires no additional anesthetic to be virtually painless. Only redness, temporary swelling or occasional small bruises sometimes occur after the treatment. However, no major consequences are to be expected. The prerequisite for a safe and satisfactory treatment is, of course, that the practitioner is a trained expert in aesthetic injection therapies. Dr. Kors has more than 20 years of experience and expertise in the field of aesthetic treatments.

Aesthetic treatments with hyaluronic acid – this is possible

Hyaluronic acid injections are primarily suitable for reducing gravity-induced wrinkles on the face, neck, décolleté or back of the hands. The active ingredient is injected under the wrinkle and lifts the tissue, so to speak. This compensates for the disturbing unevenness.

It is also possible to add specific fullness or contour to individual areas. The cheeks in particular are a popular area that can be plumped up with hyaluronic acid to correct sunken cheeks. On the chin and the so-called jawline (along the lower jaw), on the other hand, it is possible to create feminine or masculine accents.

Treatment of the lips with hyaluronic acid is also popular. Lip volume can be gently increased with hyaluronic acid to give narrow lips a fuller and more sensual appearance. Dr. Kors takes care not to make the lips look too plump or unnatural, but to ensure that they blend in with the overall aesthetic. The shape of the lips can also be adjusted slightly with hyaluronic acid.
