The skin is the largest organ in the human body and separates it from the outside and inside. This also means that it protects it daily from various influences such as UV radiation, climate, moisture, dehydration, wind, dirt and germs. It is also a significant part of the appearance. If our skin is well, we feel good. Skin diseases, on the other hand, can affect an individual’s well-being and cause various complaints. Care tailored to the needs of the skin and regular examinations by a dermatologist are very important.
As your experienced dermatologist in Berlin Dr. Kors and his practice team will be happy to inform you about various skin-specific topics. At our Weißensee Skin Center, everything revolves around this complex, sensitive and at the same time so strong organ: examination, diagnosis, consultation, treatment and aesthetic dermatology are all part of our repertoire. Our guiding principle is: healthy, protected, enjoy.
How is the skin structured?
The skin is made up of different layers. The outermost layer is the epidermis, which can be divided into the horny layer and the germ layer. Below this lies the dermis (dermis), followed by the subcutaneous fatty tissue. Normally, only the epidermis is visible. The skin layer on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet in particular is thickened to provide greater protection. These areas of the body bring us into increased contact with the environment, for example when walking, touching or grasping.
What are the skin’s functions?
One of the skin’s functions is to protect the body from external influences. Various protection mechanisms are available for this purpose. For example, the horny layer can thicken. Pigmentation by the skin pigment melanin is also a protective reaction against UV radiation. Vessels can also be dilated or constricted to regulate blood flow and the supply of certain substances. The horny layer also has a protective layer that makes it difficult for germs and pathogens to penetrate the body. This is known as the acid mantle or protective skin layer and has a pH value of around 5.5.
Other tasks of the skin include regulatingthe body’s temperature, absorbing active substances, storing water and thus protecting against dehydration and excreting metabolic products. The skin is also involved in the formation of vitamin D. Among other things, vitamin D is said to help strengthen the immune system, strengthen the muscles and have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and the psyche. This plays a particularly important role in inflammatory skin diseases.
The optimal skin care
In order for the skin to perform its important tasks, it must be intact and healthy. For this reason, a regular dermatological examination should be carried out in order to detect and treat any skin diseases at an early stage or to prevent them. Moles and liver spots in particular should be checked annually by a dermatologist. Statutory skin cancer screening provides for an examination every two years from the age of 35. From a specialist’s point of view, however, one examination per year is recommended, which can take place before the age of 35. This is then a self-payment service.
There is no universal ideal when it comes to skin care. The skin is different from person to person and therefore has its very own requirements. The “wrong” skin care can even have a negative or counterproductive effect and lead to skin irritation or blemishes, for example.
As a dermatologist with many years of experience in Berlin, Dr. Kors at the Weißensee Skin Center can also carry out a deep skin analysis on request. This analysis can be used to show the current condition of the skin. This in turn allows conclusions to be drawn about what exactly the skin is lacking and how it can be optimally supported.
What skin diseases are there?
Skin diseases can manifest themselves in different ways. They are often associated with itching, burning, inflammation or pain. In addition to these complaints, the emotional stress caused by visible abnormalities and possible unpleasant feelings should not be underestimated. These different facets are taken into account in the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases of all kinds at our skin center.
One of the main focuses of our practice is psoriasis (psoriasis) dedicated to psoriasis. The disease often occurs in episodes. White scales form on the skin on a reddish, inflamed background. The disease is not contagious. Nevertheless, those affected often feel excluded or isolate themselves for fear of the reaction of others. With the help of active ingredients that are applied to the skin or systemic and medicinal psoriasis therapy, the flare-ups can be attenuated and the symptoms alleviated.
