What happens during lip augmentation?
There are various ways to change the size or volume of the lips. During a surgical lip lift, the aesthetic plastic surgeon removes a narrow strip of tissue between the nose and the upper lip. By suturing the edges of the wound with fine sutures, the space between them is reduced and the upper lip appears larger as more lip red is visible.
In our practice, we perform lip augmentation without surgery. The volume of the lips is increased by injecting hyaluronic acid. Skin incisions or tissue removal are not necessary. As the treatment is carried out with a very thin cannula, it is painless. By applying an anesthetic cream, it is possible to additionally anesthetize the sensitive lip area to make the treatment even more comfortable for the patient. Immediately after the injection, patients can usually leave the practice and return to their normal daily routine.
What is the difference between lip augmentation and lip contouring?
The aim of lip augmentation is to visually increase the volume of the lips through surgical or non-surgical procedures. The aim is to achieve visibly and tangibly fuller lips. Lip contouring, on the other hand, includes all measures that change the lip contour or lip shape. These can be minimally invasive therapies such as hyaluronic acid injections, which can be used to emphasize the arm arch, for example. On the other hand, certain make-up techniques can also fall under lip contouring: Through the targeted application of lipstick and shading, people who are bothered by thin lips can make their lips appear larger and give their face a harmonious appearance.
If you want your lips to appear fuller and beautifully curved even without make-up, treatment with hyaluronic acid is usually the method of choice. Injection therapy achieves a natural and sensual appearance.
Advantages of lip injections
One of the major advantages of lip correction with hyaluronic acid is that the treatment is outpatient and non-surgical. The procedure only takes 15 to 30 minutes. Anesthesia is not necessary as a particularly fine needle is used to inject the active ingredient into the lip. In addition, most hyaluronic acid preparations already contain a mild anesthetic, making the treatment virtually painless. At the patient’s request, an additional anesthetic cream can be applied or a block anesthetic can be used.
Another advantage of hyaluronic acid injections is the use of natural materials. Although the hyaluronic acid used is produced synthetically, it is very similar to the body’s own hyaluronic acid, which is an important component of connective tissue, for example. This makes the treatment very well tolerated. Allergic reactions or other intolerances are practically impossible. The results of the hyaluronic acid treatment look extremely natural and are quickly visible.
Moreover, the body breaks down the hyaluronic acid completely, so there is no risk of subsequent tissue changes or long-term damage. The resorbability of the material also makes the treatment and its results reversible: if patients do not like the treatment results, they can simply wait until the hyaluronic acid has broken down.
What are the disadvantages?
There are hardly any disadvantages to lip injections with hyaluronic acid, as the procedure is particularly low-risk and painless. However, the durability of the procedure can be seen as a disadvantage, as the method does not achieve permanent results. In order for patients to enjoy fuller and harmoniously shaped lips for a long time, the injections must be repeated at regular intervals. The duration of effect of lip injections is usually around six to 18 months – this can vary from person to person and depends, among other things, on the preparation used.
What risks are associated with the treatment?
As previously mentioned, lip augmentation using hyaluronic acid is associated with few risks and complications. Possible complications include mild pain, itching, tightness, bruising, swelling, redness, inflammation and infection. These risks cannot be completely ruled out, but they rarely occur with experienced and specially trained doctors. Patients should therefore seek detailed information and advice when looking for a specialist for lip injections.
