At the Weißensee Skin Center, we have been working very successfully for years with SculpSure®. This is a diode laser that is used for non-surgical fat reduction. Particularly on the abdomen, flanks, thighs and back, unwanted fat cells can be permanently removed without the need for surgery using targeted and intensive heat. For a few months now, our technical equipment has been further expanded: we now offer our patients treatment with the innovative SculpSure® attachment to minimize the so-called double chin. How does a double chin develop?
A so-called double chin is excess tissue that is visible under the chin. Fat cells in particular, but also excess skin, can contribute to a double chin. Sagging and excess skin is usually due to the natural ageing process or severe weight loss. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity as the body’s own deposits of hyaluronic acid and collagen gradually diminish. In the case of weight loss, the skin has previously been stretched considerably and sometimes does not manage to retract over the slimmer silhouette. In this case, it remains as sagging excess skin.
If the double chin is mainly characterized by fat cells, in most cases the cause is general obesity. An unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise are the main factors that lead to excess weight and unwanted fat deposits.
However, some patients have a double chin even though the rest of their body is slim. The reason is a congenital disposition that causes an excessive storage of fat cells under the chin. If a slim parent has a double chin, there is a high probability that this predisposition will be passed on.
Do exercise and dieting help against a double chin?
If the double chin is a result of being overweight, in some cases it is possible to reduce the annoying fat deposits under the chin by changing your diet, exercising and losing weight. However, this is not always successful. Some fat deposits are stubborn and defy even training and diets. In the case of a congenital double chin, these measures usually do not help either, so aesthetic treatment is advisable.
The mode of action of SculpSure® in chin treatment
The SculpSure® procedure works by using a special applicator to deliver light-based energy to the tissue in a targeted manner. This leads to an increase in temperature in the subcutaneous fatty tissue. The unwanted fat cells are literally melted away.
Temperatures of 42 to 47 degrees break down the structure of the cells. The destroyed cells are then removed via the body’s own lymphatic system. The heat also stimulates the formation of collagen and elastin. This leads to a second positive effect in addition to fat reduction: the area is harmoniously tightened.
A built-in cooling system also ensures that the upper layer of skin is not damaged during treatment. Contact cooling also feels pleasant for patients.
A general indication for the use of SculpSure® for body contouring is a BMI below 30 so that the treatment can achieve the desired results. However, this is different when removing a double chin with SculpSure®: patients with a BMI of up to 43 can also be successfully treated for this indication.

When will I see the results?
The treatment only takes 25 minutes per area. The removal of fat cells, on the other hand, takes up to twelve weeks. The first positive results can often be seen after about six weeks. In a personal consultation, Dr. Kors and the patient decide how many treatments are advisable in order to optimize the results. As each body reacts individually, the number of treatment sessions may vary from person to person. We usually recommend two to three treatments per area.
Are the fat deposits coming back?
No, experience has shown that treatment of the double chin with SculpSure® leads to lasting results. The removed fat cells cannot regenerate. However, to support the aesthetic results, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and pay attention to diet and exercise, among other things. The remaining fat cells can continue to change and increase in volume as a result of significant weight gain. This in turn can have a negative impact on the results achieved.
