Minimally invasive treatments for a younger, fresher and healthier appearance are becoming increasingly popular. Two of the best-known treatment methods are wrinkle injections with hyaluronic acid and the wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin have become established. In modern aesthetic medicine, another procedure has been developed that is even more natural, as it works with the body’s own material: the so-called vampire lift. What at first sounds a little strange or even dangerous is actually a gentle therapy method that is carried out with the patient’s own blood. The method is not only suitable for improving skin quality and reducing wrinkles, but also for treating scars or strengthening hair growth. In the USA, the Vampire Lift (also known as PRP therapy or autologous blood therapy) has been a very popular anti-ageing procedure for some time. Interest in the treatment is also growing in this country.

How does the treatment work?
During a vampire lift, a small amount of blood is first taken from the patient and specially prepared by the doctor. The aim is to isolate the blood platelets (thrombocytes), as they contain a particularly large number of growth factors and stimulate cell renewal. The PRP (platelet-rich plasma) obtained is then injected directly under and/or into the skin using a thin cannula in the corresponding treatment area. There are also procedures in which the autologous blood concentrate is applied to the skin. In most cases, it is then advisable to incorporate the PRP with a microneedling so that the PRP can be absorbed more easily. Microneedling also stimulates skin renewal and collagen production, which enhances the rejuvenating effect.
Is the treatment painful?
As PRP treatment is carried out with the patient’s own blood, many patients imagine that the procedure will be unpleasant or even painful. Instead, however, the procedure is a particularly gentle and careful method. Only very small amounts of blood are required, which are obtained with a thin cannula and a “small prick”, just like when a blood sample is taken by a GP. Patients also barely feel the injection into the tissue. The therapy can often be carried out without additional anesthesia. In particularly sensitive areas and at the patient’s request, it is possible to apply an anesthetic cream in advance to make the areas less sensitive to pain.
How the autologous blood works under the skin
Shortly after the injection, the administered autologous blood stimulates the production of elastin and collagen – two important structural proteins which, among other things, ensure that the skin is smooth and supple. The growth factors also ensure that new cells are formed and new connective tissue is created. As a result, the skin appears firmer and fresher. With regular use, the results of the treatment are long-lasting, so it is often sufficient to refresh the therapy once or twice a year.
What are the benefits of PRP treatment?
PRP therapy is particularly popular because it is carried out without foreign substances. Only the body’s own materials are used under the skin, so that undesirable rejection reactions or allergies are practically ruled out. The body is able to completely break down the introduced substances, so there is no risk of tissue changes or long-term damage. The results of the treatment are just as natural as the substances used: the treatment areas look refreshed and harmoniously rejuvenated. PRP treatment is a particularly good alternative for patients who are concerned that treatment with Botox®, for example, could lead to a rigid or artificial appearance.
If required, PRP therapy can be combined with other minimally invasive treatments, including injections with hyaluronic acid or a deep skin cleansing with HydraFacial™ .
