Acne treatment – the gentle laser treatment with AviClear® in Berlin

Acne is very unpleasant for those affected. The redness, nodules and pimples are clearly visible in the facial area and often lead to itching, burning and painful inflammation. Pimples and blackheads occur mainly during puberty. While some teenagers only have a few blemishes that disappear quickly, others struggle with severe acne. In some cases, the disease persists into adulthood or only appears then.

A revolution in acne treatment is the gentle laser treatment that reduces pimples and inflammation in the long term. At our Weißensee Skin Center, we are one of the first practices in Germany to offer laser treatment with AviClear® for acne. The process is still new in this country and comes from the renowned medical device manufacturer CUTERA. AviClear® has been approved by the FDA and promises very good results and safe acne treatment; experience has already been gained in the USA over the last year and a half.

What is acne?

Acne is a common, non-contagious skin disease. It is characterized by pimples, pustules and blackheads (comedones). It mainly occurs in adolescents and usually disappears by itself after puberty. Treatment with medication or gentle laser therapy can be particularly useful for moderate and severe acne.

Causes & symptoms of acne

Acne is triggered by excessive sebum production, which leads to a blockage of the sebaceous glands and skin ducts. The sebaceous glands produce sebum, which mixes with dead skin cells. If a lot of sebum is produced, a solid horny plug of sebum and skin cells can form more easily at the exit of the follicle, making it harder for the sebum to drain away and blocking the duct. These occlusions can even become inflamed or form pus. It is often hormonal influences that increase sebum production in the body, but certain cosmetics or medication are also possible triggers.

Typical symptoms of acne vulgaris:

  • Blackheads (comedones)
  • Reddening of the skin
  • Papules
  • Pimple
  • Abscesses
  • Hardened tissue nodules
  • Scarring
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Inflammations

What is AviClear®?

AviClear® acne treatment

AviClear® from Cutera

AviClear® is the first FDA-approved laser treatment for all forms of acne – both mild, moderate and severe acne can be treated with the laser. The procedure is particularly gentle, safe and low-risk. No skin incisions, injections or active substances/chemicals are used. Instead, AviClear® works with laser energy that acts directly on the sebaceous glands. An integrated cooling system (AviCool™) ensures that the top layer of skin remains intact during the laser treatment.

How does AviClear® work?

AviClear® handpieceIn the AviClear® laser treatment for acne, laser light with a wavelength of 1726 nm is introduced into the tissue. The energy is absorbed by the sebaceous glands – AviClear® therefore directly addresses the cause of acne. This results in brief, intense heating, which slightly damages the sebaceous glands. This leads to the sebaceous glands being able to produce and release less sebum. As a result, the typical acne symptoms disappear. After treatment with AviClear®, patients experience fewer flare-ups and the intensity often decreases, resulting in a lasting improvement in the appearance of the skin (according to current data over approximately two years).

Is laser treatment right for me?

AviClear® is suitable for all people who suffer from acne and blemished skin. Both mild forms of skin disease and severe acne can be reduced with this innovative laser therapy. The advantage of AviClear® over other laser therapies for acne is that all skin types can be treated. The special wavelength directly addresses the sebaceous glands, whereby the skin pigment melanin plays no role. Age is also irrelevant: AviClear® can be used to treat both adolescents and adults affected by acne.

In a personal consultation, Dr. Kors will examine whether laser treatment with AviClear® is suitable for you and provide you with detailed information. If you would like to know more and are interested in a personal consultation, make an appointment at our Weißensee skin center!

Is special preparation for acne treatment with AviClear® necessary?

Extensive preparation for your AviClear® treatment is not necessary. A detailed and personal consultation takes place before every treatment. The best way to prepare for the gentle treatment is to drink enough, eat a healthy diet and protect your skin from the sun. In addition, you should not take any blood-thinning medication for about a week before the treatment. Discuss this with your doctor. Some skin care products should also ideally be avoided before the AviClear® treatment, including retinol, for example.

Procedure of the AviClear® treatment

An acne treatment with AviClear® takes approx. 30 minutes. First, the areas to be treated are cleansed and a cooling gel is applied to protect the skin in addition to AviCool™. To protect your eyes, wear special glasses during the treatment. Since AviClear® is virtually painless, no additional anesthesia is required. Only a slight pulling sensation may occur during application, but this is generally well tolerated.

Step by step, the laser is then guided over the skin and delivers the desired energy pulses to the tissue. Each area is treated for a few seconds. Finally, a cooling pad or soothing mask is applied to the skin to counteract redness.

You can leave the practice immediately after the treatment and return to your normal daily routine.

What is important after acne treatment with AviClear®?

Slight redness, swelling and minor bruising are possible after laser treatment with AviClear®. They are usually harmless and subside on their own within a few days. To support the healing process and soothe the skin, you can regularly and gently cool the area.

It is also important that you do not additionally irritate or stress your skin. Therefore, only use mild care products or clear water to cleanse the face. Also make sure you have good sun protection. It is best to use a sun cream with a high sun protection factor and avoid exposing the treated areas to direct sunlight as much as possible.

Sports and activities are possible again immediately after the laser treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

Positive effects can be seen after the first application and occur after about one to three months. For optimum results, we recommend three 30-minute treatments at intervals of around four weeks. Experience has shown that the appearance of the skin improves with each treatment and the troublesome symptoms subside.

In order to maintain the results achieved, it may be advisable to repeat the treatment. In most cases, it makes sense to repeat the laser treatment with AviClear® around nine to twelve months after the completed treatment cycle in order to refresh the results.

There may be individual differences in both the number of treatments and the refresher appointments. That is why all appointments are discussed and scheduled in person.

Since AviClear® works without skin incisions, injections or chemicals, the risks are very low. The intelligent AviCool™ cooling system protects the skin from burns and injuries. These reactions are normal and usually harmless. They subside on their own.

To ensure that treatment with AviClear® is safe and as risk-free as possible, it is important that you consult an experienced specialist. Correct application is the basis for a satisfactory and complication-free result.

How much does an acne treatment with AviClear® cost?

The cost of an acne treatment with AviClear® is determined on an individual basis. They depend, among other things, on the size of the area to be treated and the number of treatment sessions. You will therefore receive detailed information on the costs in a personal consultation.
