Tattoos are actually intended to last forever for their owners. However, it is quite possible that after a few years the artistic skin appearance no longer corresponds to personal taste or is rather disturbing. A tattoo of inferior quality can also be the reason for wanting a tattoo removal in Berlin. In modern aesthetic medicine, various laser systems are available that help to gradually fade the tattoo. In many cases, it is therefore possible to reduce the unpleasant appearance of the skin to such an extent that it is barely visible. As laser treatments usually make the skin more sensitive to light, some patients ask themselves whether tattoo removal is also possible in summer. Are there any risks? We will be happy to tell you.
How does tattoo lasering work?
During laser tattoo removal, high-frequency laser energy is emitted into the tissue. There, the energy is absorbed by the color pigments of the tattoo. The highly focused light energy therefore specifically addresses the colors. Different wavelengths are used to treat different colors. The energy splits the color pigments and breaks them down into tiny components. These small particles are then removed by the body’s own processes. This gradually fades the unwanted tattoo until it is barely visible. A slight shadow may remain, but it is hardly noticeable to the naked eye.
Tattoo lasering on tanned skin?
The laser used for tattoo removal not only affects the color pigments of the tattoo, but also the natural color pigments of the skin (melanin). He cannot distinguish between the two. When lasering pre-tanned skin, it can therefore happen that the skin areas are lightened and a temporary pigmentation disorder occurs. Experience has shown that this so-called hypopigmentation is not permanent, but it takes patience and time for the different colorations to disappear again. For this reason, it is advisable to only have the tattoo removed when the summer tan has largely faded. In addition, the skin should not be exposed to intense sunlight or tanning beds before laser treatment.
Sun protection after laser treatment
Laser treatment usually increases the skin’s sensitivity to light. This means that the skin reacts more strongly to UV radiation (from the sun and solarium) and can therefore more easily develop sunburn, pigmentation spots or other skin damage. After tattoo removal, it is therefore very important to protect the treated skin from UV radiation. Sunbathing and visits to solariums should be avoided for the first two to three months. In addition, the treated area should always be covered with a bandage or protective clothing. If it is unavoidable that the skin comes into contact with UV radiation, it should be provided with a high sun protection factor (SPF 50+).
How long does tattoo removal take?
Depending on the size of the tattoo to be removed, a laser treatment session usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. As already mentioned, the tattoo does not disappear completely straight away, but fades gradually. Accordingly, several treatment sessions are necessary, each of which takes place at intervals of four to six weeks. How many individual treatments are required to remove the tattoo in the best possible way varies. The number depends, among other things, on the size and age of the tattoo, the colors used and the quality of the tattoo. Experience has shown that at least six treatments are required for optimum tattoo removal results.
Conclusion: Tattoo removal in summer or winter?
In principle, laser treatment for tattoo removal can be carried out at any time of year. A detailed consultation with Dr. Kors and his experienced team will take place beforehand, during which all the details will be explained to you. Together with the expert, you will then also determine when is the right time for tattoo removal.
However, as UV exposure is higher in summer, it may be a good idea to postpone tattoo removal until fall and winter, when the skin is less tanned and less exposed to the sun’s rays. Since the entire tattoo removal process takes a few months, fall, winter and spring are ideal times. Ultimately, however, it is an individual and personal decision. Barely tanned and protected skin can also be treated during the summer without any problems.
