In some cases, certain symptoms can persist for a long time after an infectious disease, even if the actual illness has already been cured. In the case of COVID-19, many people are struggling with various health problems after surviving the infection. These are referred to as long or post-COVID. In particular, respiratory complaints, joint pain, headaches, tiredness, fatigue, lack of concentration and temporary loss of the sense of taste and smell are among the frequent consequences, which can last for several weeks and months.

However, COVID disease can also affect the skin and hair. Some patients report that they have noticed their hair thinning or hair loss a few months after recovery. How can PRP therapy help with this?

How does hair loss occur after COVID-19?

Late effects of corona do not only occur after a severe course; patients with a mild or even asymptomatic course can also be affected. The infection affects the entire organs and vessels of the body.

Hair loss can occur if the vessels that supply the hair follicles and hair roots are negatively affected and change. As a result, the area is less well supplied with blood and the supply of oxygen and nutrients is impaired. Experts assume that these changes cause the hair to switch from the growth phase to the loss phase. The hair will not fall out immediately, but will come off slowly. This is why hair loss can only be observed some time after the actual recovery. It usually sets in around six to eight weeks after the infection has been overcome.

A basic distinction is made in hair loss between irreversible (irreversible) and reversible (reversible) damage to the hair follicles. After a severe infection such as COVID-19, the hair follicles are sometimes affected, but they can be rebuilt and strengthened. Healthy hair growth is therefore possible again in principle. This process can be further supported with the right care and targeted treatment.

What is PRP therapy and how does it help?

PRP therapy is also known as autologous blood therapy. For the treatment, a small amount of blood is first taken from the patient. The blood is then separated using a special procedure so that the blood plasma (thrombocytes) can be isolated. This blood plasma is PRP, platelet-rich plasma.

PRP contains a large number of proteins, growth factors and stem cells. When PRP is injected into the scalp, it stimulates the body’s healing and regeneration processes. This means that more new cells and small blood capillaries are formed. This improves the blood supply to the area and provides it with more nutrients and oxygen. The hair follicles therefore receive from the therapy exactly what was taken from them by the vascular changes. In this way, they are strengthened and healthy and strong hair growth is restored. PRP therapy takes about an hour, including blood collection, preparation and injection. It is painless and low-risk, as it is carried out using thin cannulas and only natural substances are used. Due to the stimulation of the body’s own regeneration and healing as well as the effective results, it is also recommended as a supplement to surgical hair transplantation in order to optimize the results.

What else is PRP suitable for?

Autologous blood therapy can also be used for skin rejuvenation and skin tightening. The procedure and application are similar to the treatment of hair loss. The PRP is injected directly under the skin of the desired treatment area using a thin cannula. There it stimulates cell regeneration and blood circulation. New collagen is also formed in this context, causing a natural tightening effect. PRP therapy can be used to reduce unwanted wrinkles, refresh the complexion, treat slight pigmentation changes and reduce scars. Stretch marks and stretch marks can also be faded using this method.

In medicine, PRP is also used to shorten the regeneration time after muscle injuries, to treat acute or chronic wounds and painful musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis or to accelerate healing after various surgical procedures.
