A fresh and young eye area symbolizes friendliness and attractiveness. As the eyelid skin is very thin, it is correspondingly sensitive and changes can become visible in the area at an early stage. These include small wrinkles, sagging and excess skin. To make the eyes look younger and more alert again, an eyelid lift is an effective treatment option. It removes excess tissue and thus tightens the area. However, in addition to eyelid surgery, there are also non-surgical alternatives that do not require skin incisions. A modern minimally invasive method is Plasmage®. It uses the ionization of the air to achieve selective heating and vaporization of the upper skin layer. In this way, fresh and young skin is revealed without surgery.
How does Plasmage® work?
As the name suggests, Plasmage® works with plasma. Plasma is the fourth state of matter alongside solid, liquid and gas. It ionizes and is very rich in energy. On contact with solid objects, it changes the surface properties. This is also the case to a certain extent with the skin. Plasma has long been used in the medical field to sterilize surgical instruments and to treat chronic wounds.
When the Plasmage® device comes into contact with the skin, electrical energy is discharged, creating atmospheric plasma. However, no current flows through the body. Instead, the tissue is heated in a flash and therefore very briefly and selectively. This causes the top tissue to sublimate (evaporate) and thus be carefully removed. Plasmage® uses a fractionated mode, which means that the treatment is pulsed and only certain points are affected, leaving untreated areas between these points. These “bridges” between the treatment points enable faster healing and a natural result.
As Plasmage® only affects the uppermost layer of skin, the deeper tissue remains undamaged, which means that the risks are very low. Nevertheless, the treatment of the upper skin layer also stimulates the formation of firming proteins (collagen) in the deeper layers. There is not only a superficial effect, but also a restructuring of the skin for a more beautiful complexion. As the heat only acts on the tissue for a very short time and in a flash, the skin does not overheat. The energy used is also many times less than with conventional laser or radiofrequency therapies.
Can hyaluronic acid also help with eyelid lifting?
When it comes to non-surgical skin rejuvenation, treatment with hyaluronic acid often takes center stage. As a natural active ingredient, it is very well tolerated and is therefore widely used in aesthetic medicine. It is able to smooth out unwelcome wrinkles and compensate for volume deficiencies. Hyaluronic acid makes the skin smoother and firmer.
However, hyaluronic acid is less suitable for eyelid lifting. It has a plumping effect as it binds a lot of liquid. Unfortunately, it does not help with sagging tissue on the upper eyelid. What is possible, however, is to inject the so-called tear trough (“dark circles”) under the eye with hyaluronic acid. Over time, the subcutaneous fatty tissue decreases – also in the area under the eye. This can cause vessels to shimmer through and lead to dark shadows around the eyes, giving a tired and tired expression. These typical dark circles can be treated very well with the help of hyaluronic acid.
Treatment can also be carried out laterally over the eye and temples to achieve a small tightening effect. Very beautiful results can be achieved in combination with Plasmage®.
Why is the risk of scars so low with Plasmage®?
As Plasmage® only acts on the uppermost layer of skin, deeper structures remain unharmed. This means that the risk of scars is virtually eliminated when used correctly, as only the outer layer of skin is affected and renewed. At the same time, the treatment area is kept very sterile by the plasma, so that inflammation or infections are extremely rare. This also has a positive effect on healing after the treatment.
Plasmage® can even be used to treat and reduce existing scars. These include acne scars or small scars after accidents or operations.
